Responsible Gambling in Australia: Rules and Help

Person deliberately pushing aside a stack of chips at a sunlit Australian home table.

A page about responsible gambling usually opens with a paragraph about how gambling should be fun. You already know that. What you may not know is how to tell the difference between gambling that stays a pastime and gambling that has quietly stopped being one — and who to call the moment you suspect which one you have. That is what this page is for.

Providing online casino games to Australian players is illegal. There is no domestically licensed real-money online casino for Australians; licensed Australian operators are limited to sports and race wagering under the Interactive Gambling Act 2001. Offshore sites offering pokies, roulette, blackjack or online poker to Australians are not legal options, regardless of what licence they display. A Malta or Curacao licence does not authorise an operator to serve Australian customers — it never has.

The commercial gambling age in Australia is 18. If a site suggests you need to be 21 to gamble here, that stipulation about 21 is a different jurisdiction’s rule; Australia’s threshold is 18, and every licensed operator is required to enforce it.

Observable signs, not vague words

"Gambling problem" is a label. Labels do not help you decide anything. Behaviours do. Check the list against what you can actually observe:

One item is a warning. A cluster is a pattern. The list is not a diagnosis — it is a checklist you can run on yourself without anyone’s permission.

Tools available in Australia

BetStop — the national self-exclusion register

BetStop (https://www.betstop.com.au) is the National Self-Exclusion Register for online wagering. One registration excludes you from all Australian licensed online and phone wagering services in a single step — you do not need to contact operators individually.

The exclusion periods run from a minimum of three months up to a lifetime. The registration data tells you something about how people use it: around 40 per cent of registrants choose to self-exclude for life, fewer than 20 per cent take the minimum three months, and more than 14 per cent have extended or reactivated their exclusion. The people who use this tool tend to use it seriously.

One limit matters: BetStop does not cover offshore casino operators. It is a fence around the licensed wagering sector, not around the whole internet. Know which fence you are standing behind.

Deposit and payment rules

For licensed Australian wagering, the only legal deposit routes are debit cards, bank transfer, PayID/Osko and BPAY. Credit cards and cryptocurrency are banned as deposit methods since 11 June 2024. If a site invites you to deposit by credit or crypto, that site is operating outside the rules that protect you. That is a criterion, not a stylistic preference.

Licence verification

You can verify an operator by cross-referencing its licence number on the regulator’s official website. The ACMA publishes a register of Australian-licensed interactive wagering service providers. Offshore operators commonly hold Malta or Curacao licences — those authorities also maintain public registers where a licence number and its status can be checked — but a foreign licence says nothing about legality in Australia. Verify what the licence actually covers before trusting what it is presented as.

Where to get help — now, not later

This is the part that matters if anything above described you.

The National Gambling Helpline is available 24 hours a day, every day of the year. All of these services are free to contact, and none of them require you to have already "hit bottom" to be taken seriously.

Which one you contact first depends on what you need: a block, a conversation, or crisis support. Pick one and act on it today, not after the next session.

One thing worth stating directly

Gambling is not a source of income. It is not a plan for paying rent, repaying a debt, or fixing a shortfall. The maths runs one way, and it does not run toward you. If gambling has become your answer to a money problem, the money problem will get larger. Two sentences, no euphemisms.
